My Reading Experiences
As a child, my family did not do much reading with me. In the beginning, we would read every night God I love you books. After a while, it became very rare. If I had children, I would read to them. My children would read fairy tale books such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and the children’s Bible. We would read every night before bed. I believe that would help them a lot to be successful in reading. For me in school my reading experience was rather good when reading to myself, I enjoyed going at my own pace. When I did read books I would like to read books with suspense, thrill, comedy and horror. Some of those books were Boot Camp and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Sometimes I do listen to audiobooks because I enjoy listening to other people tell the story. Other people reading makes the story more interesting.
In school, I was taught certain text comprehension strategies such as recognizing story structures and summarizing. When looking for answers in a story, I would most of the time skim the story to find the answers. This was because I felt as if it is faster, and helps to get the work done. As for having reading difficulties, I don’t believe I have any. Reading is a breeze. It's only if I were to be reading out loud, I would automatically get nervous. I also believe that reading well was important to my success in middle school and high school. I am not the first generation college student in my family. But based on my experiences, my expectations about the role reading well will play in my college success, is that reading well will play a big deal in my success. It will help me improve and become a better reader. Reading well will help me to get the true understanding of the text and help me succeed in my classes.
Since the start of this semester, I have learned many more helpful things about critical and academic reading. Such as when I used to skim the readings to get answers because I thought it was faster than reading. Which is still true to me, but now I have learned how to take Cornell Notes. Cornell Note taking helps you to get all the main ideas of the text and summarize everything at the end of the notes. This better help with studying in the long run. I have also learned that there is no such thing as multitasking. When someone thinks their multitasking their really just switching from one task to the other which in all reality is slowing them down. A person must separate the urgent and important from the not urgent but important task they have to do. But there are also there also the urgent but not important and the not important or urgent. It’s really all about having good time management skills. One other thing a learned this semester is when it comes to paraphrasing you must be careful. Always! Cite your sources because plagiarism is illegal.
